MAKE CHOWRASTA A DARJEELING HERITAGE SITE - Stop Disfiguring the Heart of Darjeeling

Chowrasta, one word that evokes million memories, and nostalgia unparalleled. Yet time and again we have allowed Chowrasta to be maimed, pillaged and disfigured. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I am convinced that we are complicit in the repeated disfiguring of Chowrasta.

Whenever VIPs come to Darjeeling, whenever there is a marathon, a dog show, a flower show, a government event, an NGO event etc, they hold it in the heart of our town. They dig up Chowrasta, and place bamboos to build pandal. Now, there is a new fad to organise "haat bazaar" in Chowrasta. Depending on who is organising it, they justify it as being for "economic welfare", "tourist welfare," "sports welfare", "farmers welfare", "dogs welfare" and so on...

What is most sad is the fact that there are thousand other places where such programs can be held, but no, they have to do it in Chowrasta and we allow it to happen.

In terms of who is most at fault, I squarely blame the people of Darjeeling who keep quiet on this issue, next I blame Darjeeling Municipality. In fact Darjeeling Municipality bears the most blame.

When there were plans to build a hawkers market in Mall Road all of us protested, and thanks to public outrage the work stopped. Then we had suggested to Darjeeling Municipality that Chowrasta and Mall road need to be declared as HERITAGE SITE, where no constructions will be allowed, and no Political events will be permitted.

Can we for once stop being so indifferent and apathetic? Can we for once show in real terms that we care?

Can we all demand that CHOWRASTA BE MADE – DARJEELING HERITAGE SITE

The pilot somehow got control over the chopper which was swaying to its right.

The incident happened in Bihar's Begusarai. The video shows that the chopper almost hit the ground after taking off, however, HM Amit Shah escaped the accident narrowly.
