A Journey of Teaching, Learning, and Leading

Kanchan Mary Pradhan Teaching

I often look back at my childhood in the serene hills of Darjeeling and realize how deeply those early years shaped me. It was in those classrooms, surrounded by inspiring teachers, that I first began to dream of a life in education. Two teachers, in particular, left a lifelong mark on me, Ms. Tripti from St. Michael’s School, Darjeeling, and Ms. Renuka from St. Teresa’s HS School, Darjeeling. Their kindness, patience, and belief in me taught me lessons far beyond academics. They showed me the true power of a teacher’s influence, and I carry their spirit with me to this day.

My career began in Nepal as a classroom teacher, where every lesson was an opportunity to inspire curiosity and encourage children to see the world differently. Over time, my role expanded. I stepped into leadership positions – PYP Coordinator, School Head, and later Principal, not because I left teaching behind, but because I wanted to support teachers and students on a larger scale. Leadership, I soon discovered, is simply another form of teaching.

One of the most significant milestones of my career was becoming an IB teacher for both the PYP and MYP. Without doubt, it was the best professional decision of my life. The IB philosophy of inquiry, global-mindedness, and student agency resonated deeply with me and aligned perfectly with my belief that education should prepare children not just for exams, but for life.

Today, I serve as the Campus Head at Fairview International School Johor, Malaysia. Each day, I remind myself that leadership is not about authority but about service. It is about listening, guiding, and creating an environment where teachers can thrive and students can grow into confident, compassionate learners.

Alongside my work, I have always believed in being a lifelong learner. My Master’s in Child Development gave me a strong foundation, but it was the many trainings and international workshops I attended that broadened my perspective and deepened my ability to lead with empathy and vision. These experiences constantly remind me that learning never stops, no matter what role we hold.

Even now, despite my leadership responsibilities, teaching remains at the heart of who I am. The classroom is where my passion was born, and it continues to guide every decision I make as a leader.

My journey from Darjeeling to Malaysia has been one of growth, resilience, and purpose. If there is one thing I have learned, it is that education is not just about shaping students, it shapes us as educators too. And with every new step, I remain deeply grateful for the teachers who lit the path for me, and for the opportunity to light that path for others.

To all teachers everywhere, thank you. You are the silent architects of society, shaping lives with your patience, love, and wisdom. My message to you is simple: never underestimate the difference you make. A single word of encouragement, a moment of kindness, or a belief in a child’s potential can transform a life forever. Keep inspiring, keep believing, because your light becomes the path for others to follow.
