    CONGRATS: Historic Victory at Siliguri Bar Associa CONGRATS: Historic Victory at Siliguri Bar Association: Advocates Anamika Pradhan and Abhishek Rai Elected to Leadership Roles On April 30, 2025, the Siliguri Bar Association held a significant election that reshaped its leadership and highlighted a shift toward greater regional representation. Among the standout winners were Advocate Abhishek Rai from Kurseong, and Advocate Anamika Pradhan, a daughter of the tea garden community, both elected to the executive committee with strong support. With 1,370 votes cast out of 1,450 registered voters - a 94% turnout, this was one of the highest in recent years.. Abhishek Rai secured 737 votes, and Anamika Pradhan earned 730 votes, placing them among the top vote-getters and signaling strong confidence from their peers. Abhishek Rai, a first-generation lawyer from Kurseong, has championed cases for marginalized communities. Anamika Pradhan, raised in a tea garden community, embodies resilience of Gorkha women. Her journey from the plantations of North Bengal to the courtroom reflects her determination to overcome socio-economic barriers and amplify underrepresented voices. Their election marks a historic step toward inclusivity in Siliguri’s legal leadership, giving prominence to voices from the Darjeeling hills and tea garden communities, which have historically been underrepresented in urban professional spaces. The achievements of Abhishek Rai and Anamika Pradhan represent more than personal success, they symbolize a broader movement toward recognizing talent from marginalized regions and celebrating democratic participation. As the Siliguri Bar Association embarks on a new chapter, their leadership underscores a powerful message: - the voices from the hills and tea gardens are vital and will shape the future.

Rahman, who once headed the Bangladesh Rifles (now Border Guard Bangladesh) and is known to be close to Bangladesh’s current chief advisor Muhammad Yunus, made the incendiary remarks on Facebook in Bengali, calling for a joint military arrangement with China to support such a move. “If India attacks Pakistan, Bangladesh will have to occupy seven states of northeast India. In this regard, I feel it is necessary to start discussions on joint military arrangement with China,” Rahman wrote.
    JUST IN: Nepali Student's Death at KIIT University JUST IN: Nepali Student's Death at KIIT University, Odisha Prompts Swift Response from Indian Authorities The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic death of a Nepali student at KIIT University in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. In a press release, the MEA extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, emphasizing the government’s commitment to the safety, security, and well-being of all international students in India. In a release the MEA has said that they have been in close communication with the Odisha State Government since the incident came to light. The state authorities have pledged full support to the deceased student’s family, and the Odisha Police are conducting a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The Indian government is maintaining real-time coordination with Nepali authorities, the Odisha State Government, and KIIT University’s management to ensure transparent communication and effective handling of the situation. The MEA reiterated its dedication to safeguarding international students, vowing to monitor the case closely.
    SHOUT OUT to the Forest Department We extend our SHOUT OUT to the Forest Department We extend our thanks and gratitude to Forest Department, especially Range Officer Neela Rai for taking actions against business establishments, that have been posting festoons and hoardings on trees, across Ghoom-Mirik highway. Following our report, the hoardings have been removed, and the businesses have been given warning for causing such visual pollution. Writing about it, DFO Kurseong Official Facebook Page had posted, "A few days before The Darjeeling Chronicle had reported defacement of trees and putting commercial Banners on forest trees. Action was initiated. Banners have been removed and parties have been warned upon getting the news. Keep reporting such acts we will do the needful as per the law." We hope that business that are based in Darjeeling will take care, and avoid causing pollution this way. People don't come to Darjeeling to see hoardings, they come to see the beauty bestowed upon our region by mother nature. We also thank our reader Alphonse Rai for caring enough to share his outrage with us, which has lead to this change. Take a bow Forest Department, you all have earned it.
    LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Kurseong or Kolkata?? One o LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Kurseong or Kolkata?? One of our readers writes... "The moment anyone sees this photo it seems like it has been taken somewhere at Siliguri but it's not. It's on Kurseong hospital road. The Apollo Pharmacy is a very renowned pharmacy. But the question is do the people of Kurseong know how to read Bengali? The place where this pharmacy is located is close to Kurseong sub division hospital, where only local people of Kurseong come for the treatment not tourists or the people from Kolkata. I don't think the local people know how to read Bengali. Then why is the local administration silent? The same way a few steps ahead ICICI Bank opened their branch and same story. People from Kolkata or other parts of Bengal are not going to come to this bank and their target will be local customers. Simultaneously we can see in Kurseong, Sonada and Darjeeling the same kind of boards written in Bengali. Still the local authorities are silent. Nepali language is officially recognised as the language of India as per The 71st Amendment Act, passed in 1992 the why these types of boards are written in other languages, it can be written in Nepali. If it is written in Nepali or Hindi also, the spelling errors have to be checked in the Kurseong and Darjeeling region. GTA and local Municipal Authorities need to look into it." ..................... Didn't GTA recently pass an order requiring boards to be written in Nepali Bhasa? are these organisations defying GTA order, or has the GTA given up imposing the order in it's very first week??
