    WELL DONE: Drmatic Rescue of Elephant Calf in Gaja WELL DONE: Drmatic Rescue of Elephant Calf in Gajaldoba In a dramatic rescue, a 3-4-day-old elephant calf swept away by the strong currents of the Teesta River was rescued by local fishermen and reunited with its mother after nearly two hours of efforts. The calf was separated from its mother while crossing the river and was swept downstream from the upper section of the Teesta Barrage. After spotting the helpless calf struggling in the current, fishermen Ajay Das, Rajesh Das, Gopal Das, Mittu Das and Bishwanath Das risked their lives to pull it from the water and bring it safely to a river island. Forest personnel from the Baikunthapur Forest Division soon joined the rescue operation and began efforts to locate the mother. The calf continued calling for its mother, prompting an emotional search. After nearly two hours, the rescue team successfully reunited the newborn with its mother in the Teesta’s river-island area at Gajoldoba. The rescue has been hailed locally as a heartwarming example of compassion and wildlife conservation.

All thanks are due to the writer for exposing how "merger" has become the "𝘴𝘰 𝘫𝘢 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘢 𝘴𝘰 𝘫𝘢, 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘯𝘢 𝘎𝘢𝘣𝘣𝘢𝘳 𝘚𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘩 𝘢𝘢 𝘫𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘨𝘢" phrase, made famous by the 𝘚𝘰𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢 𝘉𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘪 character from Sholay. The article also offered an insightful survey of how psychological threats have become a convenient "bogeyman" for all political parties to invoke. But this, however juvenile a gambol, is becoming increasingly uncomfortable for us, which has led me to enumerate some points. 1. Some people with vested interests, along with their cohorts and an agent provocateur, have jettisoned all sense of public morality, decency and basic etiquette to score hazardous brownie points. 2. The Gorkhas of Darjeeling-Dooars and Kalimpong had no part in the appointment of Dr. M.P. Lama, whether as Vice-Chancellor of Sikkim University or as CEA to the Chief Minister of Sikkim. He earned those positions through his own abilities. Yet the people are being dragged into this by political trolls and disparaged for it, which is absolutely unjust. 3. The situation is turning grotesque. Our shared history, common heritage, genetic bonds, familial relationships, shared childhood, common education, and combined movements like the Bhasha Andolan are all being erased. We are stooping to outright "cannibalism." There is no drought or famine forcing us to think solely of self-survival, if anything, there is only a drought of good sense and political self-interest. 4. Though he needs no defense from a person as insignificant as me, the way Professor Mahendra P. Lama is being made a scapegoat and pilloried is without a shred of human decency. That his witch-hunt is being sanctioned by both the vocal as well as the silent majority fills me with dread about the legacy we are creating. That said, even if there are genuine grievances against him there is always a proper way to seek redressal. 5. Apart from perhaps 3 to 10 people, the rest of us, in my own estimation, do not belie

Afghan national detained in Kalimpong for illegal stay Kalimpong Police have detained a 28-year-old Afghan national for living in India without valid documents. Sayed Bilal Khan, son of Abdul Mohammad and originally from Patkika in Yusuf Khel, Kabul, Afghanistan, was staying as a tenant at Haat Bazar near the Chest Clinic under Kalimpong Police Station. During interrogation, he reportedly admitted that he is an Afghan citizen living in the country illegally. He has been forwarded to court for further legal process. Kalimpong Police have asked local residents to get tenants verified with the local police station. The appeal follows similar checks in the hill district, which lies close to international borders and remains sensitive on security grounds. Police have not released further details on how long Khan had been staying in the town or the exact provisions under which he was produced before the court.
