This 2021 Assembly elections in West Bengal, specially in the hill areas will be an uneventful , issueless and uncharacteristic election, full of rhetoric, devoid of societal passion, but replete with usual zeal and brinkmanship that only ubiquitous money power can trigger.
For all his flaws, Bimal Gurung is still liked by a large section of the people from North Bengal. Especially in remote rural regions where politicians rarely venture, Bimal Gurung is seen as someone who has cared for the people. But will this sentiment prevail across the region? In a blow to the West Bengal police the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Darjeeling District Court yesterday quashed their earlier order proclaiming Bimal Gurung, Roshan Giri and four others as “proclaimed offender.”
“We have sent a memorandum to the BJP, demanding Gorkhaland. They(BJP) have assured us that they will look into it. We are happy that their (BJP’s) manifesto speaks about bringing a permanent solution to the region,”
“Peace in the hills today is akin to the peace of the graveyard. In fact corruption, intimidation, threats, curtailing of democratic and constitutional rights and making a mockery of the judicial system has increased in Darjeeling than in rest of the state. What has developed in Darjeeling is the suppression and oppression of peoples’ sentiments,” Gurung alleged.
The Supreme Court also instructed Calcutta High Court not to refer the matter to session courts where the cases have been filed, and instead instructed Calcutta HC to expedite hearing into the case and pass interim order as it sees fit, provided the petitioners file the appeal within the next four days.
