Jorebunglow police yesterday arrested a 49-year-old man Ramashankar Shah, on charges of raping a three-and-a-half-year-old girl baby girl, near Ghoom.
According to locals, the man Ramashankar is originally from Muzzafarpur in Bihar and had come to Darjeeling around four years ago. He runs a shop, next to the house where the baby girl was assaulted.
One of the locals stated, “the baby girl was at home with her father who is known to be a drunk, Ramashankar brought more booze with him and once the father became inebriated, he committed the crime.
Later, the mother of the baby girl found her bleeding profusely and in a state of shock and trauma, she also saw Saha in the house. The baby girl was rushed to the hospital, and an FIR was lodged and Saha was immediately arrested.
“He has been charged under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act,” stated the Public Prosecutor.
POCSO Section 6 includes ‘Punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault’, as being “whoever, commits aggravated penetrative sexual assault, shall be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term which shall not be less than ten years but which may extend to imprisonment for life and shall also be liable to fine.”
We are saddened by the outrageous incident and we hope we one day achieve our dream of a safe and secure society for women. Our hills has always held a reputation for being a safe place for women, though such incidents have always been happening under the blanket. Lets have no place or sympathy in our place for rapists and molesters.
We also hope that the child recovers soon and that proper justice is served to her.
