A 28-year-old man from the Kurseong Sub-Division area was arrested from his residence on the 4th of September, on charges of sexual assault on a minor girl child under Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act , after Child Line, Kurseong Sub-Center’s intervention.
The accused belongs to the same village as the victim’s family, sharing a very close relation with them, and would frequently visit their home.
The incident reportedly took place on the 3rd of September, when the accused sexually molested the minor twice.
According to sources, “Investigations by the Kurseong Child Line has revealed that the accused visited the victim’s home in the morning that day when her parents were not at home, and molested her. However, on being threatened by the child, he fled the scene. He again visited their home at night, in an inebriated state and molested her again as her parents were outside.”
We have been informed that, “following the incident, the child narrated everything to her mother. The parents then went on to raise the issue with their neighbours, who shockingly chose to settle the case internally and to forgive the accused culprit”.
However, the case reached the Child Line, Kurseong Sub Center, at the night of the following day, who wasted no time and reached the place the same night itself. After conducting preliminary investigation on their part, the team encouraged and helped the family to file an official complaint at a nearby Police Station. Correspondingly, a complaint was filed and the culprit was arrested under the POCSO Act.
We express our appreciation towards the Child Line team, Kurseong Sub-Center for their prompt and swift action.
We are however concerned on how such cases are being dealt at the village level.
We request everyone to inform the Police immediately if such case of sexual assault comes into your notice, instead of settling it internally inside the village.
