Zeuxine yonzoneanaNew orchid named after Kalimpong Botanist Dr. Rajendra Yonzone

Zeuxine yonzoneana is a new orchid that has been named after it’s discoverer Dr. Rajendra Yonzone from Kalimpong

Kalimpong has every reason to celebrate, as one of its own, Dr. Rajendra Yonzone. Born to the Late Sangdup Yonzone and the Late Prettimaya Tamang, discovered a brand-new terrestrial orchid, now recognised worldwide as Zeuxine yonzoneana. The finding, published in the reputed journal Phytotaxa, is not just a scientific discovery but rather a story of patience, perseverance and pride for the hills.

The orchid was first discovered on 13th October, 2017 in the Samalbong area of Kalimpong District. A fragile plant 14 cm tall, it bears yellowish-white flowers, and its features have never been documented before. In a rare honour, the orchid now carries Dr. Yonzone’s surname, ensuring that his contribution will remain etched in botanical history.

At present, Dr. Yonzone serves as an Assistant Professor of Botany at Victoria Institution (College), Kolkata. Beyond his academic duties, he has devoted nearly two decades to exploring the forests of the Eastern Himalayas, often travelling alone in search of orchids, medicinal herbs, aromatic plants, and the traditional knowledge that surrounds them. His long journey in research has already brought him recognition across the country.

What makes Zeuxine yonzoneana special goes beyond classification. Every new species broadens our understanding of the Eastern Himalayas, one of the most fragile and biodiverse regions in the world. Who knows what hidden ecological roles or medicinal potential this fragile orchid may hold for the future?

But perhaps the bigger story is the man himself. Growing up in Purba Samalbong Busty, Dr. Yonzone quietly built a career with unshakable dedication. His journey has turned into a quiet source of motivation for many students and young researchers, not only in Kalimpong and Darjeeling but also much further away. It reminds people that even from remote corners of our land, with dedication, determination, discipline and belief, one can make a mark on the global stage.
