Is this an admittance of guilt? or the human touch, which Bengal hopes will help salvage the emotional connect that people in the hills have completely lost with Nabanna, we will never know. But sources say that Mamata Banerjee government is likely to hand over compensations to the next of kin of people who were killed in police action and those injured in police action, during the recent Gorkhaland agitation.

Compensation for the next of the kin was one of the demands placed by Binay Tamang on the September 12 meeting, held at Siliguri.

There are “ifs” and “buts” associated with the compensation to be handed out. Telegraph reports that “A senior state government official, however, said the compensation wouldn’t be paid if the deceased or the injured had criminal records.”

It does beg a question, are people with a criminal record a free game to be shot at?

Today as the hill parties meet at Pintail Village in Siliguri, the government is likely to announce Rs 2 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each for the injured.
