A group of concerned citizens under the banner of Senior Citizens Forum filed a memorandum with the Kalimpong District Magistrate Dr. Vishwanath, and the Director Parks and Gardens, Gorkhaland Territorial Administration highlighting the threat posed to the only public park in Kalimpong town.
In their letter, the forum members write, “it is reliably learnt that certain interested financial magnet is in the near future about to bifurcate a large portion of the premises of the Park [industrial park] for vehicle parking and shops which is highly and totally condemned by the senior citizen’s forum as well as all the youths of Kalimpong.
Your immediate attention is here by drawn for your pragmatic perusal and necessary action in order to facilitate the benefits enjoyed by the undersigned persons” [sic]/
Speaking to the Press, Mr. Leslie John, the Legal Advisor to Senior Citizen’s Forum said, “the Industrial Park is the only public park in Kalimpong town, and people here from all walks of life spend time. This park adds to the beauty of our town, but we have come to know that some contractors want to build a parking lot below the park, and a shopping mall on the top. This is very hurtful and we won’t permit anything like this to happen. This is why we have written to the Director Parks GTA, Kalimpong DM, and other concerned officials.
Reacting to the letter one of the members of GTA Board of Administrators Sanchbir Subba said, “I am not sure from where the senior citizen’s forum have heard about any such plans to convert the Industrial Park, we are unaware of any such plans, so we cannot comment on the same.”
