It is tragic that in India, football has been relegated to the margins. While it is still popular among the masses, the mainstream media has found a way to ignore the raise of our Indian Football Team, and relegated most of our recent achievements to only a column or two.
However, this is how Al Ittihad News (شبكة الاتحاد) – an Arabic language newspaper published daily in the United Arab Emirates, heralded the achievement of Asian Superstar and our nation’s pride Sunil Chhetri surpassing the Argentinian legend Leo Messi‘s 66 international goals to become the second most highest goal scorer – among active players – in the world.
By scoring two goals in his first match at this year’s Asian Cup, Sunil Chhetri displaced Messi as the second-most prolific scorer in national team soccer. He now has scored 67 times for his country, trailing only Ronaldo’s 85.
But he remains grounded as ever, “There is no comparison whatsoever between me and Lionel Messi or Ronaldo, but I am very, very honored,” Chhetri said after India beat Thailand 4-1 in its opening game at the Asian Cup. “I don’t take it for granted, the goals I score for my country. Every time I get an opportunity, I do my best to score.”
At 34, Chhetri is in the form of his life, and we thank Al Ittihad news paper for celebrating OUR LEGEND in their beautiful way.
