When the opportunity to visit India presented itself to me, I knew right away that majestic Himalayan Darjeeling would be the top of my list, as the world-famous Darjeeling tea grows there. Darjeeling is all about tea estates covered in clouds; white mountain tops in the distance and tasty tea. If you enjoy at least an occasional cup of tea, it’s definitely worth visiting the Indian paradise of tea in West Bengal, Darjeeling! It’s the place to see how hundred-year-old tea bushes grow, how locals pluck the leaves and it gradually becomes the tea we all know.


International Plastic Free Day and the Himalayan Cleanup Campaign 2021 – A Brief Analysis.

“The Himalayan Cleanup from Home-2021” campaign was attended by about 184 participants who have successfully submitted data and waste audit report on five days of total household waste category, degradable or non-degradable waste forms, various category of plastic and successfully audited the various types brands and manufacturers of plastic waste. Participants in the first phase were from the Himalayan states and Union Territories of India viz. Nagaland, West Bengal (mainly Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Siliguri), Meghalaya, Ladakh, Sikkim, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Tripura.

Mountain Farmers of Sikkim-Darjeeling Dealing with COVID & Nature

Although Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts of West Bengal and the state of Sikkim have been projected predominantly as tourist sites, the mainstay of the rural population continues to be agriculture. According to Census 2011, the majority of the population here are rural (60.58% in Darjeeling-Kalimpong & 75.03% in Sikkim) and agriculture is the main occupation. Here farming communities depend on wage labour, small businesses and tourism (homestays) to augment their income from agriculture and all these were also closed during the lockdown period.

This shows absolute lack of empathy by TMC Govt towards over 25 Lakh Gorkhas who live in West Bengal and whose lingua franca is Nepali. The discrimination against Gorkhas is apparent for everyone to see. This absolute indifference on the part of West Bengal government exposes their intent and discriminatory policy towards the Gorkhas, and thus justifies the demand for a separate state of Gorkhaland.
