My space over a cup of Tea

When looked at it from a sociological perspective, even a simple cup of tea helps build a web of social relationships, which eventually helps to understand a person, pattern the social relationships follow over a cup of tea and finally how a simple cup of tea contributes to the larger society.

TheDC team joins Nepali Sahitya Sammelan Darjeeling in mourning the death of our Sahitya Akademi Awardee Karna Thami sir. He was one of the pivotal figures in the Nepali Bhasa Manyata Abhiyan – which was instrumental in getting Nepali language recognized under the VIIIth Schedule of our Constitution.

My aunts waited for the cremation to end and sat and gossiped among themselves. They were talking about some place where women had cremated the dead, an unheard of practice, Keti haru lay garnu parcha abo. Someone also mentioned in hushed voices that in some tea garden, a woman had given birth to a dark-skinnned baby, “nikkhur kalo nani”. There was anxiety in their voices. I didn’t really understand the implication of these conversations.




Qasim Khallow – From Kalimpong to Bollywood and Kathmandu

I have used Cinema to escape my reality. I was born and brought up in the narrow quarrelsome neighbourhood of Relli Road, Kalimpong. My childhood was mostly centred around the 100 metre radius of the vicinity and inside a small single room where a family of 5 people lived. Street fights, drunken men, abuses and pigs happily strolling in the streets were part of my reality as a kid. Cinema helped me escape this reality.
